Policy Proposals for Addressing Microaggressions Among LGBTQ+ Youth
From Research Conducted by Students and Faculty at the Institute for Behavioral Science Research, Srinakharinwirot University

Microaggression refers to words, actions, or behaviors that subtly insult or socially exclude marginalized groups. These actions are often unintentional but negatively impact individuals, particularly LGBTQ+ youth. Examples of microaggressions include biased comments, intrusive questions, or gestures that reflect gender identity or sexual orientation prejudices.

The effects of microaggressions on LGBTQ+ youth may include internalized gender identity rejection, loss of self-worth, declining academic performance, school absenteeism, or even suicidal thoughts.

Thus, policy proposals to address microaggressions serve as crucial mechanisms for promoting social justice and enhancing the well-being of LGBTQ+ youth in educational settings. Based on research findings, these proposals can be categorized into four key areas:

  1. Counseling services
  2. Education and awareness on gender diversity and sexual orientation
  3. Inclusive infrastructure and facilities
  4. Freedom of expression and LGBTQ+ student activities

These policy recommendations are derived from research published in The Journal of Behavioral Science. The authors emphasize that addressing microaggressions among LGBTQ+ youth requires policy-driven efforts to foster safer educational environments in Thai society.
